Historic Savannah Foundation Partners with Pedestrian Advocates

In 2006, Pedestrian Advocates for the Coastal Empire teamed up with Historic Savannah Foundation for Preservation Week. Hubert Middle School and Derenne Middle School, Chatham County schools, participated in the program. Schools allotted three days in the afternoon to teach about walkability, urban planning and architectural styles to 31 students. The kids did a survey of their neighborhoods, wrote to city officials, and designed and laid out the city. City and County officials visited to evaluate the students' "safe route" to and from school. Another group created a mini Box City as a reward for a poster contest. "This program is so versatile. We will definitely continue to present this program in Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools. " Program Administrator: Cassie Dolecki, Preservation Coordinator, cdolecki@historicsavannahfoundation.org.
