Historic Savannah Foundation Partners with Pedestrian Advocates


In 2006, Pedestrian Advocates for the Coastal Empire teamed up with
Historic Savannah Foundation for Preservation Week. Hubert Middle
School and Derenne Middle School, Chatham County schools,
participated in the program. Schools allotted three days in the
afternoon to teach about walkability, urban planning and
architectural styles to 31 students. The kids did a survey of their
neighborhoods, wrote to city officials, and designed and laid out the
city. City and County officials visited to evaluate the students'
"safe route" to and from school. Another group created a mini Box
City as a reward for a poster contest. "This program is so
versatile. We will definitely continue to present this program in
Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools. " Program Administrator:
