Exploring Wichita Old Town
Exploring Architecture:
Interdisciplinary Approaches to Wichita’s Old Town
Instructor: Marcia Scurfield, USD 259 art teacher
Date: Monday-Wednesday, June 13 - 15, 2005
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Description: The Old Town area in downtown Wichita, Kansas, and the Walk Around the Block curriculum from CUBE (Center for Understanding the Built Environment) will serve as the “texts” for this participatory Arts Partners seminar. This will be the fourth architecture workshop that Marcia Scurfield, who was trained by CUBE, has led for Arts Partners. Teachers (grades 3-12) will learn how to use local architecture to create interdisciplinary units that incorporate visual art, math, language arts, and social studies that reach, and teach, students with a diversity of learning styles.
Visit converted warehouses with a new lease on life as restaurants, apartments, and museums. Learn about the development of Wichita’s Old Town district and the history of the area. While the Old Town area will be our model, the activities can be applied to other neighborhoods. Participants will need good walking shoes, a camera with one roll of film and funds for one hour processing.
All participants must pay a $40 materials fee to reserve a space in the workshop. The materials fee of $40, payable to Arts Partners, needs to be mailed to Arts Partners, 201 N Water, Suite 300, Wichita, KS 67202, by May 16. After that date the materials fee is $45.
Along with your materials fee, please include the following information about yourself: name and summer mailing address; home phone number and email address; and grade level or discipline you teach and the name of your school. If you want to receive one credit hour, graduate or undergraduate, through Wichita State University, you need to pay the materials fee as described above and enroll in Art E 711E, Section 08808 at WSU. If you want to enroll in Art E 711E, include that information, and Arts Partners will mail you an enrollment form.
