Year End Report
By Ginny Graves
As we close in on the last year, there is good news to report about CUBE and Community Based Education.
•The Cadre network is working well (provides workshop capabilities nationally)
•The web site is producing interest (we are constantly updating and adding)
•Phone outreach (everyone appreciates talking to a real person)
•Our contact with Cadre and members is continuous (18 mailings)
•Ellerbe Becket, The Powell Family Foundation and AIA/Kansas are just three of our continuing funders.
•The number of Box Cities has increased over previous years
You may be interested to know that in addition to educators, Box Cities have been sponsored by Planners, Architects, Museums, Science Fairs. Two special areas of interest are Box City Green and a workshop for the Michigan Council on Foundations (training youth to make responsible decisions in their communities).
Box City On-Line has been a terrific boon. Saves time and teachers can access it instantly. In addition, we now have on the web site a list of Favorite Activities from Walk around the Block (a great prep for an extended Box City). It is located in the Teacher Resource section of www.cubekc.org.
Thanks to all of you for the work you do. Many of you do this in a volunteer capacity, and we all appreciate your role in making community-based education a part of the curriculum. I would especially like to mention Volunteer Extraordinaire, Mary Ellen Kirtley who serves as a liaison for the Kansas City area and makes possible the museum and educator connections we have established there. Of national interest, Sharon Uhler of Shawnee Town museum bravely tackled the topic of integrating community-based education into Standards. Read about her work at http://cubekc.org/scrapbook41.html or visit the web site and select scrapbook.
Dean and I are spending more time in Tuscon, but thanks to cell, phone, fax, snail mail and all of you, we are able to communicate with just about anyone who needs support or wants to get started in community based education.
