Gardner School of Architecture and Design

Last Day Celebration
A note from Kristin Hoxie, Gardner Museum Manager:
We decided to do Box City and by digging in old files, found out it had been done here before—by CUBE! Our event will be a four day event, occurring Saturdays from 9 a.m until 12 p.m. in February. The students will meet with our city planner, learn about architectural styles from an architect in a local firm, work on residential styles with each student "building" their own home, and finally, work with a preservationist at the last session. A pizza party will celbrate the "opening of the city." Parents are invited to a reception on the last afternoon and will produce their own structures.
The Box City we held here was a huge success. We had 35 participants in grades 4 - 6 (far more than we anticipated). There are more pictures online at http://www.gardnermuseumarchitecture.org/BoxCity1.htm for people to view. I really think the kids learned a lot and so did we. For budget reasons, our city was made out of recycle boxes with the addition of gable roof houses from CUBE. We are going to try another this March. Thanks for all your help!
