A Community Building Activity: Picture This!

The Picture Postcard tells a story: the story of your town. By the images the card presents, it tells what you were (historic buildings) and what you are (images of the present). You, as the creator of a Picture Postcard, can influence the way your community will look in 25 or 50 or maybe 100 years. By photographing or sketching, create a card which documents a place, a landscape, a new building, an old building, a street, a street sign, a landmark, a monument, an example of good design, and YES!-even something that you don't like.

Write a message-be creative and play the part of a tourist; be a futurist and suggest an improvement for 2050; be a historian and express the importance of a particular old building; be a magician and "bring back" something which your community has destroyed or lost. Tell us why you like a certain place, for instance, "The Santa Fe neighborhood has great tree-lined streets, and community-making front porches. Let's create more neighborhoods like this!" "The Power and Light Building is a landmark for the entire city. Let's make sure its lights keep burning." "The Plaza is unique architecturally. Can we keep it unique as a shopping experience?" "18th & Vine-an opportunity waiting to happen. Let's enhance our real history."

Send your postcard to the mayor, the city planning commission, your neighborhood association. People responsible for making your community a better place need to know who you are and that you care!

Picture This is just one of many community-based education activities contained in CUBE's Box City curriculum.
