Kirtley has taught 3rd, 5th, and 6th grades. In addition, she has been a Title I Math teacher in grades 2-6, and has taught higher-level math problem strategies to grades 1-6. Her current school, Prairie, has used the Box City project with third graders for six years. The emphasis is on how cities develop-it extends our Social Studies curriculum. Kirtley remarks, "Ironically, when I first started teaching, my fifth graders made a three dimensional layout of Jamestown Virginia, primarily using boxes. We even had real water in the James River! Another year we made a replica of Washington, D. C. with monuments, points of interests and authentic street layouts. It is no wonder that Box City has become a love of mine!" Kirtley became involved in Box City due to a parent, Linda Johnson.
