The Buckman Road Summer Adventure Camp
Summer, 1999. Coordinators: Patricia Cooper and Mary Cabrielle
We must admit, we thought one week was going to be more than enough time for this activity, especially for our older group (11-14). Boy were we wrong! The children loved it! We couldn't get the older group to stop planning and start building. They really got into the planning and redesigning of their city.
Our camp took place at an apartment complex in Alexandria, Virginia. The questions we put before the children was what if the Mayor of Alexandria said he was going to have to tear down the Buckman Road Apartment complex and redesign it by the year 2025? We asked the children what they thought their apartment complex and their neighborhood would look like in the year 2025? Our theme for that week: The future is now.
We had three groups working on box cities: the Bad Guys, ages 4-6; the Superstars, ages 7-10; and the Ruff Ryders, ages 11-14. Our cities are still up and we marvel at them all the time.
